District Brings Home 23 State Medals
District 1 brought home a total of 23 medals from the PIAA Championships in Hershey, 22 in AAA and one from AA. The District had three in the finals, two in AAA and one in AA, where each fell short of state gold. For the first time since 1995, no District 1 wrestler won gold.
Of the 23 medal winners 15 were seniors, which means eight will be returning to the mats next season. Five are currently juniors with three being sophomores. In AA, the District’s lone representative was Octorara’s Josh Smith, who made it to the finals at 171 pounds only to fall by a 3-2 score. In AAA, the two District 1 finalists were Council Rock North’s Jamie Callender at 189 and Abington’s David Osei at 285. Both had to settle for the silver.
Overall, 26 from the District qualified but failed to earn a medal. Nine of those wrestlers were juniors, seven were sophomores and one was a freshman. Those 17 wrestlers gained valuable experience for next season, and beyond. Congratulations to all the qualifiers and medalists!

New Look for District 1 Wrestling Website
NHSCA Sports Network unveiled a redesigned District 1 website for the 2008-09 season that includes several new features plus easy to find links to all 12 Pennsylvania District homepages. Additional features include 100 win club and the archives area. Both of these new pages will be expanded over the course of this year as more information is collected. For example, we are looking for the record of any District 1 wrestler who has won 100 matches or more in their career. However, we will need them to be broken down by season so that they may be entered into our database. In addition, we would like to have the records of any wrestler who has 40 or more wins in a single season. As we are collecting these statistics across the state, if you have access to any additional records that we are mising, please email them to the NHSCA Sports Network.
Rankings Directory: We are in the process of organizing a directory of wrestling rankings around the state. Check back often for additional rankings and updates.
